UAE Legal Tread Depth Requirement
The legal minimum tread depth for passenger vehicle tyres on UAE roads is **1.6mm** across the central three-quarters of the tyre width throughout the entire circumference.
This is the number that will cause a Tasjeel inspection failure and result in a Dh500 fine if your tyres are at or below this level on the road. Dubai Police traffic patrols have the authority to check tyre condition during traffic stops and can issue fines and vehicle impoundment notices for tyres that are visually at or below the legal minimum.
Why RTA and Safety Guidelines Recommend 3mm in UAE
The 1.6mm legal minimum was established for temperate climate conditions. UAE conditions change the equation significantly.
**Heat degrades rubber compound faster than wear:** A tyre in Dubai at 1.6mm tread has experienced multiple summers of heat-induced compound hardening. The rubber is stiffer, less compliant, and provides reduced grip compared to a European tyre at the same tread depth.
**Wet grip degrades faster in heat-hardened rubber:** Dubai's rainfall is rare but intense. A tyre at 1.6mm tread in normal temperature conditions still provides acceptable wet braking. A heat-hardened tyre at 1.6mm in Dubai provides significantly less wet grip. When November rain falls on hot November roads, stopping distances increase dramatically.
**Tasjeel fails tyres on condition, not just depth:** RTA Tasjeel inspectors check tyre condition holistically — compound cracking, sidewall damage, uneven wear, and visual age indicators are all grounds for failure even if the measured tread depth is above 1.6mm. A tyre at 2mm with visible compound cracking from heat will fail Tasjeel.
The practical recommendation: replace tyres at 3mm in Dubai conditions. At 2mm, schedule immediate replacement. Do not drive a UAE vehicle to the 1.6mm legal limit expecting full safety performance.
How to Measure Tread Depth
**Method 1 — Tread wear indicators (TWI)**
Every tyre has small rubber bars moulded into the base of the tread grooves. These are the tread wear indicators, located at the bottom of the grooves at a depth of exactly 1.6mm. When the tread surface is flush with these bars, the tyre is at the legal minimum and must be replaced.
Look for small arrows or TWI markings on the tyre sidewall — these point to the locations in the circumference where the wear indicators are located.
**Method 2 — Tread depth gauge**
A calibrated tread depth gauge costs AED 10 to AED 25 at any auto parts store in Dubai (Carrefour auto section, AutoPro, or any garage supply shop). Insert the probe into the tread groove at the point of minimum depth. The reading shows remaining tread in millimetres.
Measure at three points around the circumference and at three positions across the tyre width. The minimum reading across all nine measurement points is your effective tread depth.
**Method 3 — AED 1 coin test (approximate)**
Insert a UAE 1 dirham coin into the tread groove with the number facing down. If the gold edge of the coin is visible above the tread surface, the tread depth is approximately 2mm or less. This is an approximate indicator only — use a proper gauge for accuracy.
Tread Wear Patterns and What They Mean
**Even wear across full tread width:** Normal. Correct alignment, correct pressure, regular rotation.
**Centre wear (middle wears faster than edges):** Over-inflation. The tyre contact patch concentrates in the centre because the tyre is overly round. Correct by reducing pressure to specification.
**Edge wear (both edges wear faster than centre):** Under-inflation. The tyre contact patch concentrates at the edges because the tyre flattens under load. Correct by inflating to specification. Under-inflation in Dubai summer is a blowout risk — address immediately.
**One-sided edge wear (inner or outer edge only):** Camber misalignment. The tyre is tilted in one direction, wearing one edge preferentially. Requires wheel alignment correction.
**Feathering or sawtooth wear:** Toe misalignment. The tyre scrubs sideways as it rotates. Requires wheel alignment correction. Can develop quickly on Dubai roads after speed hump impacts.
**Cupping or scalloping (wavy pattern):** Worn shock absorbers or struts. The wheel bounces on the road surface rather than maintaining contact. Common on older vehicles in Dubai. Requires suspension inspection.
**Diagonal wear patches:** Wheel imbalance or bent wheel. Requires balancing check and wheel inspection.
Tasjeel RTA Inspection and Tyres
Dubai Tasjeel vehicle inspection centres check tyres as part of the annual registration renewal inspection. The inspection includes:
A Tasjeel failure on tyres requires correction before re-inspection. Re-inspection fee: AED 150 per attempt.
**Planning for Tasjeel:** If your vehicle registration renewal is approaching, check your tyres 4 to 6 weeks beforehand. This gives time to source and fit replacement tyres, check alignment, and confirm the vehicle will pass without the time pressure of an imminent deadline.
- Tread depth verification — below 1.6mm fails
- Tyre size verification — must match vehicle registration
- Sidewall condition — cracks, bulges, or cuts cause failure
- Tyre age — tyres more than 5 years old (verified by DOT date code) may fail
- Repair condition — rope plug repairs are not RTA-compliant and will fail
Tyre Rotation — Why It Matters for Even Wear in Dubai
Tyre rotation moves tyres from one position to another on the vehicle to equalise wear across all four positions. Front tyres on front-wheel-drive vehicles carry steering and braking load in addition to driving force, which wears them faster than rears. Rotating ensures all four tyres wear at the same rate and reach replacement depth at the same time.
Recommended rotation interval in Dubai conditions: every 10,000 km.
Rotation pattern for front-wheel-drive vehicles: front tyres move straight to rear, rear tyres cross to opposite front positions.
Rotation pattern for rear-wheel-drive and AWD vehicles: consult your vehicle manual for the specific pattern. Some AWD manufacturers do not recommend rotation — check before assuming.
Directional tyres (with an arrow indicating rotation direction) can only be moved front to rear on the same side. They cannot cross-rotate without dismounting the tyre from the rim and remounting.
How Long Should Tyres Last in Dubai?
Expected tyre life in Dubai conditions by vehicle type:
The 5-year age limit overrides mileage. A tyre with 6mm of tread remaining that is 6 years old should be replaced regardless of the depth measurement.
| Vehicle Type | Expected Tyre Life | Limiting Factor |
|---|---|---|
| Sedan (Michelin, Bridgestone) | 50,000 to 70,000 km | Tread wear |
| Sedan (Hankook, Falken) | 35,000 to 55,000 km | Tread wear |
| SUV and 4x4 (premium brand) | 60,000 to 80,000 km | Tread wear or age |
| SUV on rough roads | 30,000 to 50,000 km | Tread wear |
| All vehicles regardless of tread | 5 years maximum | Heat-induced compound degradation |
